Cypress Semiconductor recently announced the launch of CapSenseTM technology, a new capacitive touch sensor interface based on its award-winning programmable system-on-chip (PSoCTM) mixed-signal array. A single PSoC device can replace numerous mechanical switches and controllers using a simple touch controller. Compared to mechanically equivalent products, CapSense-based "buttons" and sliding contact controllers exhibit higher reliability due to their strong resistance to environmental wear and tear, which easily damages exposed buttons and switches. diode
Compared to capacitive touch sensor products based on modules and components, Cypress's CapSense solutions offer numerous advantages to system designers, including flexibility, reduced board-level space, and lower costs. Beyond touch sensing, designers can easily integrate multiple functions (e.g., LED drivers and LCD displays) leveraging its unique PSoC architecture. The PSoC CapSense solution also provides additional benefits, such as simplified serial communication via I2C or SPI interfaces, the ability to use the same device for both touchpad (x-y matrix) and linear slider applications, and the capability to achieve rapid design changes using the flash-based PSoC architecture.
